Voted Carbondale’s Best Bike Shop for two consecutive years, it is our goal at The Bike Surgeon to grow the cycling community in southern Illinois.
We strive to achieve this goal through many efforts including delivering an unforgettable bike shop experience, maintaining a shop race team, support of other local and regional cycling clubs and groups, coordinating cycling specific events and many other community outreach efforts. Our plans to help us achieve these goals include:
* Recruit Team Surgeon Racers and Sponsors
* Assist with fund-raising and development of new trails
* Assist with on-going existing SNFS approved trail maintenance
* Encourage a healthy and fit lifestyle
* Revive road racing, support cyclocross racing, and introduce mountain bike racing, all the while increasing the passion and awareness of cycling in Carbondale and southern Illinois (this in turn will assist in bringing Carbondale new revenue)
* Assist in raising “share the road” awareness to help make cycling safer for both cyclists and motorists
History
The Bike Surgeon was originally founded in 1974 by Mark Robinson, internationally famous for his hospitality to cyclists on the Trans America Trail and his custom built “bomb-proof” wheels (which are still available today upon request!). The Bike Surgeon is owned today by Jon and Emily Greenstreet. It is the second oldest shop in Carbondale, and has been at its current location for over nine years.
In 2004, Jon and I purchased the bike shop, young, ambitious, and with three children under the age of four. A little over three years later we now have four children (yes, we’re done!), the business is growing and the shop is literally bursting at the seams! We owe a huge thanks to all of our team for this success, thanks guys for everything!!
While our story isn’t quite as unique as other shops that were founded and became what they are today due to dares, long road trips filled with grueling temperatures, lots of sweat and strange twists of events, our story is simply that we both enjoy the many challenges and rewards that come from being involved with our shop. The day Jon asked if we could buy a bike shop did not strike me as life altering at the time, boy was I wrong. It takes a lot of sweat and miles to bring together and grow the cycling community (of which I am new to this year). We share the vision of many other cyclists and are fortunate (or maybe just crazy!) enough to be in a position to rally enough forces together to put Carbondale on the map for cycling.
Having a family and running our own business are not exactly conducive to free time, but I try very hard to get my miles in and achieve balance in my life. And that simply is our story.
