Got a small group of us guys going to head over to ride the rails to trails tomorrow (sat)... we were planning on heading to Brown County this weekend, but as you know the weather has blown that away. Anyway, if anyone is interested in heading over, we will be meeting in Mt. Vernon, leaving from West school parking lot at 0700. We will probably ride from the other side of Harrisburg to the high bridge and back, probably about 40 miles total...

We went there a few years ago. such a nice trail. We started at tunnel hill and rode to viena? and back. Learned a bit of history and had a nice time. i loved it but it killed my wife The ride back was a 5% uphill ride.... guessing. It was noticable. Still a great time!! Have fun !

I'm guessing I have rode it about 5 or 6 times now... its a good one to take new folks on, but it is a work out for sure. Especially today as some spots were mushy. Still a good ride. We ended up starting at Stone fort and riding to Vienna and back. Ended up with a little over 37 miles...

dnr.state.il.us/LANDS/LANDMGT/Parks/R5/tunnel.htmpicasaweb.google.com/spiritwild/TunnelHill#At one time, the rumble of freight cars reverberated through the narrow tunnel. Wooden trestles, with their system of slanted supports and horizontal cross pieces, spanned numerous bluffs and creeks. Passengers in Pullman cars clocked the miles with these and other landmarks as they traveled one of southern Illinois' most scenic routes. Today, the railroad is gone. The route, known as Tunnel Hill State Trail, remains. trailTunnel Hill State Trail stretches for 45 miles from Harrisburg to Karnak, with 2.5 miles being managed by the city of Harrisburg. The trail continues on a trails spur for 2.5 miles from Karnak to Cache River State Natural Area - Henry Barkhausen Wetlands Center on the old Chicago and Eastern Illinois railroad bed. picasaweb.google.com/spiritwild/TunnelHill#5311370956496166290
