I thought the trail would "berm" up with some use, but you guys are probably right. Maybe we could use the small cultivator to shape the trail??? I plan on working Sunday morning. Should be out there sometime between 7:30 and 8 am.

Soil is too dry to effectivly contour loose dirt. I've been trying thats for sure. Even after it rains the soil is dry as a bone about a 1/2 inch down. The soil on "the hill" reminds me of dust bunnies. Real dry , silty, and mossy feeling. We should probly wait untill the dirt is holding more moisture to really mess with the insloped turns i was talking about. The other options are carring a water sprayer with us, or building crib walls to hold the loose dirt in but we have no rocks. Anyhow ,The new trail rides 10 times better after the revisions now tho. There are only a couple of places that i would like to work with now and they will be alot easier to mess with in the fall when the dirt is not as dry and holds in place better. This is really only a problem in the steep sections anyhow where the loose stuff keeps just falling off the edge of the trail.
I probly will not make trail day this month. I have to work on sunday. But i will be out there friday night most likely and thu out the week to work here and there. The next section is relitivly flat and should be easy to get some distance done till that huge downed tree. - Ride on,Zach

Sorry i was not able to make it to the work day on Sunday. I met a guy at the parking lot friday evening and we were talking about the new trail. He didnt know anything about the work days and he was very interested in helping. I think we need to put something on the kiosk sign out there about work days. Anyway smack did an awesome job out there friday clearing new trail and rerouting the first sharp corner towards the beginning at the top of the hill. I plan on being out there sometime next weekend to do some benchcutting.

Walked the new trail last night. Cut some vines. But its hot- hot this week. Most likely wont get a whole lot of heavy work done until temp drops a bit.

I worked on the briars at the beginning of the extension last Saturday but ran out of gas, literally and figuratively! So hot!!! Hope to do some trimming/pruning tomorrow evening.

Yep, but it didn't look like anyone showed up this past sunday, including myself. My business is open 7 days a week and I work most sundays. I did, however clear another 1/4 mile of trail through the vine grove on top of the hill this past week that is ready to ride. The next section will need some chainsaw work for those of you who are certified to use them in the park. As far as work days go, I would love to try and organize two of these a month instead of one. Or better for me would be one organized work night a week until it starts getting dark early. Im out there two or three nights a week now anyhow.

Zack, I'm in for evening work now. I've gone back to work until October, so I am only available in the evenings - weekends are busy! I've made it over a couple of evenings but concentrated on keeping the existing trails rideable. I'm chainsaw certified, so let me know when you're going to be out there. I'd prefer Thursdays 'cause my wife works late that day. The two-a-month idea is good, but we've just got to wait until it cools off a little before we'll get a crowd.

Tim, Thursdays are great for me, I have that night free and is one of the normal nights i go out there. This week I will be out there sunday night and def thursday night. I usually sign in about 6 and park at the walnut shelter area and walk on in. This gives me a couple of hours to work before it gets too dark. If you haven't been over there , I've got the trail back to the old road bed but on top of the hill now. Although the trail is totally ridable I want to get a bit of bench cutting done on a couple of small areas before i can say that that section is done. Chainsaw work: There is a log over the trail where I stopped last time that would be a good candidate for a little drop similar to what is on the "the Hill". Next, there is a smaller tree, to cut apart a few yards past that, then last there is a large tree right before the next downhill That is going to be pretty dangerous to cut, I think. You may see it differently. So I'll see ya Thursday , and that go's to anyone else who wants to pitch in too, its hot and dirty but to me its all worth it when i get to ride it. -zach

Great seeing you at the trails today - looks like you have two candidates for serious mtn biking in a few years!
I'll plan on Thursday for sure. If the one tree seems too dangerous for us, I'll talk to Vince who works at the park. He is the chainsaw expert for HSP and usually very willing to help on the trails when we can't handle it. I'll bring gas for the chainsaw. Dan Cates said we're out. I should get there around 5:30 pm, so I'll meet you at the Walnut picnic site w/ the chainsaw.

Good seeing you and all the people enjoying the trails today! Made me think of what we are doing out there is for much more than personal enjoyment. That was my boys first real trail ride today and it was the first day my 5 year old rode a bike that could change gears and had hand brakes instead of a coster brake. I don't think i was riding without training wheels at 5 but this kid has been doing it since he was 3. They amaze me.
Tomorrow night or monday night I'll be out there either bench cutting the two small sections i wanted to get done or extending the trail a bit. I'll probly be out there both nights but one of them I'll just ride. Thursday we can knock out those trees and get them out of the way. I'm real excited about the next downhill section. Just want to get to start knocking it out!
Also anyone reading this, we have not got much feed back on how you think the new trail is riding. If you have rode it give us a shout with your comments. - zach

I will try to make it out there when I can on Thursdays. I can come straight after work and be there around 5:30. Sounds like it was a good weekend at harmonie. Also I think the 2 work days a week is a good idea. Once a month is just not enough, especially if nobody can make it. I have a feeling that we will be able to get a lot more accomplished when the weather starts to cool off.
