I am converting my old bike to BMX in some ignorance. I'm not sure what parts are necessary and what parts are for pros. It used to be a mountain bike and it has mountain bike tires and I'm not sure if BMX tires are absolutely necessary. Just general information about BMX bikes would be extremely helpful!

The main difference between bmx and mountain bikes is the diameter of the wheels. BMX bikes have a 20" diameter and mountain bikes typically have a 26" diameter. The frame and fork on every bike is designed to use a specific wheel diameter. So if you try to run a different size wheel, you may run into compatibility issues with brakes and other things. I hope that helps.

As long as they are the correct diameter, any tire should work. If you are running bmx wheels, then you will need 20" tires. If you are running mtb wheels, then you will need 26" tires. You should probably measure the diameter of your wheels to figure out which size that you need.
