Hello everyone! My name is Bryce. I'm 32 (soon to be 33) years old, married to my wonderful and amazing wife Jill, and have 2 kids (Trejan is 4, Jalen is turning 3 in a couple weeks). I work for a company called TLS out of Columbus, IN...but I live in Holland, IN and work from my home (I'm in sales, so I cover southern Indiana and KY). My company is a technology company, and I recently started with them this past January. I probably have the least amount of experience with mountain biking here. I bought one shortly after I met my wife, but mainly used it for roads...and to try and stay in shape alongside Jill. We had our first kid, the bike gathered dust, etc. Early last year I started riding the bike (a Trek 3700) on the road for exercise and found myself on it 3-4 times a week. Shortly after I met another person through work that was an avid roadbiker and wanted to try mountain biking. We decided one weekend to head out to Ferdinand State Forest and try our hand at mountain biking. We had NO idea what to expect. Wow, talk about a bad place to start! I got through about 2 miles of the tracks and thought I was going to hurl! That is a brutal ride for someone without the legs for it. haha. But by the end of the day we made it through about 4-5 miles of tracks, no bad crashes, sweat everywhere, and this strange feeling of enjoyment. So last year we ended up heading to Scales Lake 3 or 4 more times and really enjoyed ourselves. I've yet to hit the trails this year for a few reasons: 1. I'm not a big fan of summer woods riding. Hot + ticks = eh... 2. I'm not a big fan of going by myself since I'm so new...so timing just hasn't worked with my buddy yet. Seeing that fall is just around the corner, I've started to get the bug again. I've been doing this P90X workout program the past 60 days to get in shape, and man is it working. My buddy and I are going to try New Harmonie trails sometime in September...so that should be fun. I hope to make a few new friends on these boards....people that I can learn from and possibly go riding with. Just don't expect me to keep up! -Bryce

Ahh forgot to mention: My wife and I are selling our house in Holland and looking to move to Ferdinand. We bought some land about 1 mile away from Ferd state forest, so eventually I'm going to have to get in good enough shape to enjoy that place!!!! Also, I know my bike isn't going to take much of a beating. I'm a bigger guy weighing in around 215... Eventually I'm upgrading. I'd lke to buy local, and those options are going to include: Fuji, Scott, and Trek..

I have moved the Ferdinand topics to the "where we ride / Ferdinand" board. Had to copy the text in to one post. Currently no way to move a single post in a topic. Just trying to keep this board free for introduction / welcome topics only. Thanks !!

I am Paul Arlinghaus,
I weened my addiction to racing mountain bikes, by becoming addicted to building mtb trails. In addition to rolling up the sleeves and digging in the dirt, I also have been working on trails on the paper work and advocacy side.
So, while I live in Indianapolis, and still haven't made it back down since the IMBA visit, I do have a interest in the trails at Harmonie State Park.
Being successful building trails in State Parks and State Forests requires efforts from the mtb community both at the local level and at the state level.
I need you all at the local level to make Harmonie and Ferdinand successes. And hopefully, I can help navigate the higher level DNR stuff to get access to more trails, not only at Harmonie State Park, but at other DNR properties throughout the state.
The trails on the ground at Harmonie are just the beginning. So get out and ride this summer and then rally to build more trails this fall and winter.
If you have any questions about HMBA, or the big picture on state parks and state forests, send me an email or pm.
Thanks,
Paul Arlinghaus President, HMBA

Hi all.
Name is Mike and spent 7yrs in Portland, OR giving up golf for increased riding time only to have it all washed away by wife, 2 kids and a move back to the midwest.
Ya, I can ride here but I hate the lack of shoulders and ass hat IN drivers that seem joyed by their ability to get just close enough. MTB, still love it but am spoiled from the epic rides that put Mountain in MTB. Anyway, enough carping.
Lazy, trying to avoid getting fat, legs are skinny again and get winded going up to the freezer for a beer pop. So, I have to start riding again.
Glad to see this site and I had been using MTBR a bit when relocated to Eville 2.5 years ago.
I still want to get out to LBtL, New Harmony and all the other local places as I only live up the street from Angel Mounds. Took my 10yr old daughter out there, she screamed at all the mud and loved it when we got back. Too many weeds last time I was out and came back stinging and poison ivy on the legs. Weeds still high?
Recently got into track days on my Ducati Hypermotard and that has sucked up some cash and time. Was thinking about a mx bike and trying Lynnville but decided I would benefit from MTB'ing more.
Anyway, hi all and if you happen to pass some slow ass dude on a yellow Rocky Mountain Element, be kind!!

I'm gonna keep replies here, seems easier than trying to move.
Anyway, Angel Mounds is in great shape and this time of year, "considering the rains" it is 99% dry and fast.
Maintenance crew has kept up pretty good with the weeds. Usually about early june they are really grown up but a lot of people including myself and others here, go out and clear them.
I don't think it was poison ivy, I suppose it could have been, but it sounds like the (Stinging Nettle) or (itch weed) that probably got ya's. The stuff is horrible in spring.
Nathan, another member and I are always at angel mounds. I'm all serious biking and he rides with a beer in one hand. ;D

New to the SIMTB community. Have lived in Southern Indiana for about 6 years now. 3 years in Bloomington for law school and 3 years in Newburgh/Evansville for work. Originally from Utah and grew up riding mountain bikes in Moab (Slickrock) and the Wasatch Mountains. Have not ridden since late 90s. Bought a used bike about 6 months ago and am loving it again. I hope we can organize some rides through the forum. Looking forward to riding with y'all.

Did not complete the login process before posting. Cart before the horse, I guess. Anyway, excited that this community exists. By the way, I'm 32, married, and have four kids.

I know this is not MTB specific but does any one on here compete in Cyclocross? I'm going into my 2 year of racing CX and would like to get some group CX practice days started if there are any takers.

My name is Josh, and I'm from Henderson KY. I've been riding my Hardrock Pro with street tires for fitness on the road since February, and this weekend I got a chance to swap the tires and ride on the trails at Angel Mounds. Needless to say I'm now hopelessly addicted. Since we got a lot of rain this weekend I have not been able to go back out, but I'm ready and willing as soon as it dries up some. How long does one generally need to wait? (Yeah I'm itching to go back that much.) So if you see a very large guy on the trails on a Hardrock that looks like a commuter (for now anyway) say hi.

Welcome!! Angel mounds dries fairly quick when the ground is dry for a while. This last storm dropped some serious rain so I would expect the slough to be impassable. Spring and winter are a different story.don't let that scare you away, there's still some good rides by the levee.
Henderson huh. I have not been back to the green river forest, next to audubon park, in a year or so, they had just started mowing trails and they were pretty rough. There were some old access roads you can ride. I think they could work for just stayin in shape. One trail is a fairly decent moderately long climb. I'd like to see how they look after a year or so.

reply to jrt:
I rode Angel Mounds on Wednesday. It was great, a bit wet, but great. It was not so wet that I rutted up the trail, but everything was passable and it was quick.

I actually went over there on Wednesday afternoon myself. I rode the Figure 8 trail which I had not ridden before. It seemed fine nearly everywhere.

Cool, i need to get out there and ride this weekend. I enjoy the place. it's not the greatest place on earth but it's the only one within a reasonable drive. I'm just up the street 5 miles, so it's convenient for me.
it's been fun watching the place rebound from the carnage of log trucks and tornadoes. it's better now than it ever was. if someone would quit blocking of trails it would be even better.
