We went out today, my first time out there. Place is cool- It was weird to see it be thick with trees, then be wide open from the tornado damage around the next bend. Kinda eerie.
Once we fix the weed eater, we're totally game to help. It was a lot of fun, but definitely needs some TLC- the bits that had been groomed looked great though. I'd love to see it in great shape again. The thorny vines that stick out into the trail are painful to hit at speed, and all the loose sticks and limb bits are rather hazardous- I actually flipped over the bars and twisted the hell out of my bike's front end from hitting one at a bad angle. Damned threaded headsets...

I think I passed you as I was coming back from riding and you were heading out. I recognized the bike. The thorns are still pretty bad out there, and there are these little chunks of tree all over the place. Makes riding tricky.

Don't worry, only have about 48 more years and the trees will grow back (ha)
I'm not sure what day I'll be out there, sat or sun. I want to clear the original trail that ran the length of the west end. I followed it through the other day.
Like Nathan said before, some of the trail has a groove wearing in down to the bridge, it's just the muck in between that is the problem. The original trail bypassed all that.
Mike said they are going to put gravel in this summer. I just hope it's not the big chunky kind the size of charcoal.
And by the way, thanks for helping out.

Nathan what were you riding? we were there in the Maroon lowered Subaru Forester so if that was in the parking lot then it was us that you passed. We did pass a few people on the way in one of which was on a FS Giant I believe?

I was riding a blue/white FS Specialized and wearing a black shirt/helmet. My friend Alex was behind me on a yellow/silver FS Giant and wearing a white shirt/helmet.
You were just climbing over the guard rail when I got back to the car.

Went out today for about 4 hours and opened up a portion of old trail on the west side. it starts where the trail comes out into the corn field and heads south. from there it hooks east and pops out about 75 ft from the bridge. Here's a photo i was going to try and keep heading south but things started getting to cluttered. Too many downed trees. I just blocked that portion off. it's not bad looking, has a few spots that I think will hold water. Won't know till it's wet. When I was done with the trail and headed over to find the trail that nathan uncovered. Here's a photo of that trail Everybody did a great job with the weedeating, it looks great !!

Whoa, do I see elevation change?
I was going to head to Harmonie tomorrow but since it's soggy I'm probably going to go out and do more weedeating. I think I'm going to park at the boat ramp and work my way in.

Maybe, if you fell off your bike ;D It's coming around pretty good, if it would dry out a little more, you could get a full loop in. Well, maybe when we get the slough crossing up and the government guys throw their gravel down this summer. Need to keep it open, it's a great enduro ride. Plus it's about the only place you can take your kids or less experienced riders. What kind of string are you using on your weed eater ? I was thinking about buying a brush blade for mine. I cat the trail yesterday with a hand weed tool, the kind you swing. It's great for cutting through those damn thorn vines that are everywhere. I knew if I took a normal weed eater I would end up being pissed off. Anyway, for clearing trails quickly of just the tall grass and plants, I thought a brush blade would be better than string on my weed eater. Something like this : ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41w%2Bz3F-ZFL._SL500_AA280_.jpgNeed to rake those damn sticks off the trails too.

I'm just using standard string and it's holding up pretty well. Andrew, the guy who helped me last week, had this thing I referred to as the Tri-Force that we used for the heavier sections. It has 3 little plastic/kevlar hinged blades on it.

I got a bit more clearing done today. I started at the boat ramp and worked my way along the field for a while. I started seeing a lot of wasps in one spot and they started doing flybys so I got kind of freaked out and headed the other way.
I started working my way along the river trail and got a pretty good stretch cleared out. After a while I surrendered to the burning itching, sweat in my eyes, and the weedeater constantly getting vines wrapped up in it and stalling. Didn't get as much done as I'd hoped, but it's still progress.
A large branch fell on the trail next to the field. I tried to move it but I think it's gonna take a chainsaw.
Footnote: I left the trail entrance from the boat ramp overgrown until you get to the fork in the trail. I'm hoping this keeps traffic from the end of the trail down, because from past experience the people who usually walk in from down there like to leave litter all over the place.
